How to Verify an Online International Degree Before You Pay

A practical seven-point guide for Nigerians and working professionals who want to avoid costly mistakes and choose with confidence.

Fontini InsightsUpdated August 20269-minute read

The biggest risk is not choosing the “wrong course.” It is paying for a qualification that does not serve the purpose you need — employment, promotion, professional licensing, migration or further study. Verification must come before payment.

Start here: A university can be legitimate while a particular programme, delivery arrangement or future use still requires separate confirmation. Ask who awards the qualification, which authority oversees it and whether your intended receiver will accept it.

The seven checks to complete before enrolment

1Identify the awarding institution

The training centre, recruitment partner and university may be different organisations. Your certificate should clearly show the actual awarding institution.

2Check the official regulator

Use the regulator or quality-assurance authority in the institution’s home country. Do not rely only on an agent’s badge or brochure.

3Verify the programme itself

Confirm the programme title, level, study mode, awarding route and current status. Institutional approval does not automatically answer every programme-level question.

4Confirm your intended use

Employment, public-service promotion, professional registration, migration and further study can involve different receiving bodies and rules.

5Request written evidence

Save official links, programme specifications, admission terms, refund rules and any written recognition response relevant to your case.

6Review delivery and assessment

Ask how classes, examinations, projects, supervision and student identity checks work. A serious programme should explain its academic process clearly.

7Check the total commitment

Understand tuition, extra fees, time per week, technology requirements, duration, project or dissertation expectations and graduation conditions.

Make a fit decision

Choose only when recognition, career relevance, affordability and workload all support your goal.

Who should you verify with?

Your intended use Authority or receiver to contact Question to ask
Use within Nigeria The relevant Nigerian education authority, employer or admissions office Will this exact foreign qualification and study route be accepted for my purpose?
Migration or overseas study The destination institution, immigration route or credential evaluator What evaluation is required, and will the awarding institution send records directly?
Professional licensing The profession’s statutory or licensing body Does this programme satisfy academic and practice requirements?
Private-sector promotion Your employer’s HR or learning team Does the organisation accept this qualification for the role or grade?

Nigeria’s National Universities Commission describes quality assurance and cooperation with foreign quality-assurance agencies as part of its open and distance education role. The Federal Ministry of Education’s Evaluation and Accreditation System also provides information for using foreign qualifications in Nigeria. For US or Canadian study and employment pathways, a receiving organisation may request evaluation from a service such as World Education Services. Always confirm the requirement with the final receiver.

Red flags that should make you pause

  • The agent will not name the awarding institution before payment.
  • Recognition claims are broad but no regulator or official register is linked.
  • You are pressured to pay immediately to “secure” a place.
  • The programme promises an unrealistically short route with little assessment.
  • Admission requirements are unclear or apparently apply to everyone.
  • No written refund, withdrawal or academic-integrity policy is available.
  • The same qualification is described differently across the brochure, website and offer letter.

A better question than “Is it accredited?”

Ask: “Who awards this exact qualification, who regulates that institution and will the organisation that matters to me accept it for my intended purpose?” That question separates marketing language from a decision you can defend later.

How Fontini reduces the confusion

Fontini helps applicants compare programme fit, review published entry requirements, prepare documentation and ask the right recognition questions before enrolment. We do not suggest that one qualification will automatically be accepted for every job, country, regulator or professional purpose. Your intended use should guide the verification route.

Frequently asked questions

Does online study automatically make a degree invalid?

No single answer applies everywhere. The awarding institution, applicable regulator, programme arrangement and intended receiver all matter. Verify the exact case.

Is university recognition the same as programme recognition?

Not always. Some systems separately regulate institutions, programmes, professions or delivery partnerships. Check each relevant layer.

Should I pay before receiving verification evidence?

It is safer to review official evidence, terms and your intended receiver’s requirements before making a non-refundable commitment.

Verify first. Apply with clarity.

Tell us the programme you are considering and what you want to use it for. We will help you identify the right questions and the most suitable next step.
